`Construct toilets by March-end'

Officials told to meet the deadline

MANGALORE: The president of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Sushma Janardhan has instructed officials concerned to ensure that the construction of toilets for schools and anganwadis, under the Nirmal Gram scheme as part of the total sanitation campaign, is completed by the end of March.

Presiding over the monthly review meeting of Karnataka Development Programmes here on Thursday,

Ms. Janardhan directed the officials to forward the names of gram panchayats eligible for "Nirmal Gram Puraskar" to the Union Ministry of Rural Development.

The zilla panchayat was yet to receive Rs. 2.25 crore grant from the State and Union governments under the scheme, she said.

Referring to the issue of providing computers to gram panchayats, Ms. Janardhan said that a few executive officers of the five taluk panchayats had failed to meet the December 2006 deadline set for the purpose.

Directing the executive officers to comply with the directive given by A.M. Kunjappa, chief executive officer of the zilla panchayat by March, she said action would be taken against officials who failed to do so.

Mr. Kunjappa directed all heads of department to ensure implementation of the various projects given to their respective departments by the end of current fiscal year.
