VIRUDHUNAGAR : Several works at a cost of Rs. 90.90 lakh under the Western Ghats Development Programme will be taken up in Rajapalayam, Srivilliputtur and Watrap blocks. According to an official press release, the Collector, S.S. Jawahar, has given administrative sanctions to the works, which have aimed at preserving and restoring ecology. The programme is also focussed on sustainable use of bio-diversity based on the needs and aspirations of local communities for sustainable livelihoods. A total of Rs. 46.95 lakh has been allotted to construct drainages, culvert and retaining wall, formation of metal road, cement road and thrashing floor and installation of Internet kiosks. A transit centre will be constructed at Mettupatti of Seithur town panchayat at Rs. 4 lakh. Besides, a bed dam in the irrigation channel for the Periyar River to Panthankulam will be constructed at a cost of Rs. 7 lakh. With a view to developing tourism, the children's park at the Pilavakkal dam is to be rejuvenated and modernised at a cost of Rs. 7 lakh. Other works under the programme include construction of group houses, procurement of essential equipment for hospitals at Zaminkollangondan, Uppathur and R. Reddiapatti and an aquarium at the Pilavakkal Periyar dam. The works are scheduled to be completed by March 31.
