KARIMNAGAR:
Power supply was cut off to some parts of South India due to shutting down of two 200 Megawatt units following a bomb threat to the 2600 MW plant at the National Thermal Power Corporation, Ramagundam, on Thursday evening.
The power cut was aggravated in parts of South India as already one 200 Megawatts unit was shut down for annual overhaul recently. However, the NTPC authorities restarted the 2x200 MW unit in the evening and this would be synchronised to the power grid.
The NTPC and police authorities said that the fire wing department of the Central Industrial Security Force received an anonymous call stating that PWG naxalites had planted a bomb in one of the plants and it would explode in the evening.
Immediately, the local police, the CISF, bomb and dog squads were pressed into service and a massive combing operation was conducted in all seven units and in the township. It turned out that the call was a hoax.
During the search operations, the NTPC authorities shut down two units of 2x200 MW units as a precautionary measure to avoid a total black-out of all the seven units and for regeneration purposes.
