Workers' bodies recovered

Staff Reporter

TAMBARAM : The bodies of two of the three workers who drowned in the Pallikaranai marsh while sinking concrete rings on Wednesday, have been retrieved. The body of Vanathayyan was pulled on Wednesday evening, while that of Badsha and Sahayam were retrieved on Thursday.

It was a complicated task, officials of the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services Department said. The primary task was to bale out water. Officials said sand bags were dumped near the site. Though it helped in preventing flow of water around the rings, it was not an easy task to remove the rubble as the surface was slushy. By 9.15 a.m., firemen managed to retrieve one body, while second one was retrieved by 1.15 p.m.

The police have begun investigations. There are more than 50 transmission posts in the Pallikaranai Marshland of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board. Two lines, one 230 kV and another 110 kV, run parallel to each other carrying power supply to Taramani sub-station from the Singaperumal Koil sub-station.
