CHENNAI: Economist Raja J. Chelliah on Thursday called for enough attention to be paid to economics, as it was important from the perspective of safeguarding the interests of the country. "Economics has become very important subject ... from the point of the country's future," he told a function organised by the Southern India Chamber of Commerce and Industry here to felicitate him on his being conferred with the Padma Vibhushan. The knowledge of economics was necessary to get a clear understanding of the issues concerning the country's economy and their implications, he said. Dr. Chelliah, who is the chairman emeritus of the Madras School of Economics (MSE), also underscored the need to promote the concept of pursuing excellence single-minded. Noting that it would help in developing world-class institutions, he said the concept, however, had not permeated the education system. The concept must also be applied to teaching. Once that happened, Chennai could be the home to centres of excellence in several fields. Since such initiatives would also require resources, there was a need for the private sector to supplement the Government's efforts. Dr. Chelliah presented the chamber's cash award for the best student of commerce of Madras University to V. Krithiga. Former Chief Election Commissioner T.S. Krishnamurthy recalled his association with him. Chamber's past president R. Veeramani said Dr. Chelliah, along with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh laid the foundation for reforms. MSE director D.K. Srivastava said Dr. Chelliah paid great attention to detail and had a positive and optimistic outlook. Chamber president S. Ramanathan spoke.
