MADURAI : The State Government would implement a combined water supply scheme with the Cauvery river as source at a cost of Rs.148 crore to cater to the drinking water needs of those residing in rural areas in Madurai district, said P. Moorthy, Member of Legislative Assembly of Sholavandan constituency, here on Thursday. Addressing a meeting organised to mark the inauguration of the second phase of distribution of free colour television sets in the district at Chinna Ilandaikulam village near Alanganallur, he said that the scheme would cover rural habitations, including those in Kottampatti, Melur municipality, A. Vellalapatti, Alanganallur, Palamedu, Paravai, Tirumangalam municipality and Tirupparankundram. The first phase of survey for the project had been completed and an estimate forwarded to the State Government, he said. In an attempt to ensure smooth driving for sugarcane farmers and vehicle users, the Government would broaden the road and provide black topping at a cost of Rs.70 crore for the road linking Thanichiyam with Melur and Tiruppuvanam, Mr. Moorthy said. Besides, Rs.20 lakh had been earmarked for road development works in Alanganallur and Vadipatti, he added. More than 60 bus routes had been introduced in the past seven months connecting all remote areas in the constituency, he said. Inaugurating the distribution, A. Tamilarasi, Minister for Adi Dravida Welfare, said that the Government had provided an opportunity for women residing in rural areas to gain general knowledge through the scheme. The Government was very keen to improve the standard of life in rural areas, she said. S. Mookiah, Deputy Collector (distribution of free colour television sets), said that in the second phase one lakh colour television sets would be distributed to beneficiaries in Madurai district this year 10,000 television sets for each constituency. They would be distributed in a phased manner, he said and added that in each quarter 10,000 sets would be given away in the district. To start with, the lowest populated areas would be identified for distribution on Saturdays and Sundays, Mr. Mookiah said. On the inaugural day, television sets were distributed to 333 beneficiaries. C. Rajamani, District Revenue Officer, presided over the function. The Mayor, G. Thenmozhi, distributed free television sets to 927 beneficiaries at a function at held at ward 24 on Wednesday. The Deputy Mayor, P.M. Mannan, the chairperson of standing committee on Education, A. Ponnuthai, and the West Zone Chairman, B.R.M. Chinnan, were present.
