KOCHI: The City Corporation has suggested setting up of decentralised units for management of solid waste generated in the wards. The move comes under a proposal made by the Ministry of Local Self-Government to promote such units in the State. P.K. Raveendran, private secretary to Minister for Local Self-Government Paloli Mohammadkutty, who addressed a workshop on decentralised solid waste management here on Thursday, said such units could be run easily with the money now spent on transporting waste to select points. He said: "Segregate the waste at the source itself. Kochi Corporation can set up biogas plants in various divisions. The council should discuss whether the waste generated in the city should be transported to faraway places for processing." "The authorities could experiment with various treatment options. They could also entrust Kudumbasree units to collect waste generated in the Corporation areas," he said. Assistant Commissioner of Police K.P. Lailaram said the city police would organise a convention during the last week of February to create more awareness on waste management techniques. "Police would organise the programme with the support of residents' associations. Various methods of waste processing would be showed at the venue through audiovisual techniques," he said.
