KOCHI: The Naval Ship Repair Yard celebrated its 59th anniversary on Thursday. Established in 1948 here as the Base Repair Organisation, the yard was re-christened in 1988. The yard is in charge of the upkeep and fighting capabilities of Naval and Coast Guard ships based here. It has been pursuing modernisation plans and infrastructure-development activities, to provide necessary support to new-generation warships. To augment the quality of manpower intake, the Apprentice Training School was set up in 1973. The year 1987 saw a major augmentation of facilities, with the setting up of specialised workshops for overhaul and repairs of internal-combustion engines and electrical and weapons systems. Rear Admiral M.P. Muralidharan, Flag Officer, Sea Training, accompanied by Commodore A.K. Verma, Commodore Superintendent of the yard, inaugurated the anniversary celebrations by lighting the traditional lamp. Rear Admiral M.P. Muralidharan addressed the gathering and gave away prizes to the winners of sports events held as part of the anniversary.
