KOCHI: In spite of additional water flow from the Boothathankettu barrage following the restarting of the second generator at Idamalayar, water in the Periyar continues to be muddied. Two shutters in the barrage, with a 20-cm width, have been kept open in the hope that the strong gush of water will force the sediments from Kallarkutty down to the sea. This is to help clean the Periyar waters, on which lakhs of people downstream rely for water. The Periyar got discoloured and muddied following the flushing of the Kallarkutty reservoir. This has sent down huge quantities of silt into the river. Water level at the Boothathankettu barrage remained at 34.35 metres on Thursday.
No harm to barrage
Irrigation Department officials said the extra release from the barrage would harm neither the Purappillykkaavu bund nor the Paathaalam bund. The muddying of the river has caused concern among devotees who will be arriving at Aluva Manappuram on Sivaratri day.
