THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Education in human rights have instilled `confidence' and `courage' in Muslim girls of Malappuram, said Mohammed Saleem who teaches at AUPS School, Karuvambaram in Manjeri. Mr. Saleem was talking about the positive response to a programme on human rights education from the students of class VI of the school at a seminar on `Human Rights and Review of National Programme for Human Rights Education in Schools.' The seminar was organised by `Peoples Watch' and South India Cell for Human Rights Education and Monitoring (SICHREM) in the city on Thursday. The programme on human rights education for the students of class VI is currently implemented by SICHREM in 55 schools across the State. Selected teachers from each school interact with students during free hours. "The sessions help in building personal bonds between teachers and students," said P.J. Josey, State convenor, SICHREM. "The students now do not hesitate to discuss their personal problems with the teachers. They have started raising all types of questions regarding the community in which they live," said Mr. Josey.
