Special Correspondent
Thiruvananthapuram: The Federation of Residents' Associations, Thiruvananthapuram (FRAT) has urged the State and Central Governments to draw a long-term action plan to control the spiralling price of essential commodities. The federation proposed a package of measures at a dharna organised in front of the Secretariat on Thursday. It urged the Civil Supplies Corporation and the Kerala State Horticulture Development Corporation to launch a network of retail outlets for groceries, fruits and vegetables. The recommendations include the constitution of a task force to crack down on traders hoarding goods and those indulging in black marketing, a boycott of shops that do not display the price list and direct procurement of grocery items and fruits and vegetables from production centres. Mayor C. Jayan Babu inaugurated the dharna. V. Sivankutty, MLA; former Union Minister O. Rajagopal, DCC president V.S. Sivakumar, freedom fighter K.E. Mammen, FRAT president T.K. Bhaskara Panicker, secretary Paraniyam Devakumar and representatives of various residents' associations participated in the dharna.
