KWA team inspects Aruvikkara pumping station

G. Mahadevan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A team of top Kerala Water Authority (KWA) officials led by Technical Member C. Suresh Babu held a surprise inspection at the authority's pumping station and offices at Aruvikkara. They seized logbooks and records for scrutiny.

The documents included logs of the pressure of water being pumped and of maintenance activities.

According to a press note issued here, the inspection was carried out on the direction of Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran and was in response to complaints about the repeated bursts that occur in the main lines that ferry water from Aruvikkara to the city.

Mr. Suresh Babu, who also heads the KWA's Vigilance wing, later told The Hindu that a preliminary reading of water pressure-related logs revealed that there were spikes in the pressure in the main water lines around the time they burst recently.

'Further study'

"We have sent the logs for further study to determine whether the variations in water pressure took place due to technical reasons or were man made. We will be able to know this for sure by Monday," he added.

The team also included a chemical analysis expert who took water samples for gauging the purity of water pumped from Aruvikkara. The inspection team also took statements from KWA officials at the pumping station.
