NEW DELHI: Lack of access to affordable health care to large segments of people living below the poverty line is a cause for major concern, said Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhwat at the inauguration of the 4th South Asian Neurosurgery Conference here on Thursday.
Pain of deprivation
"In my long public life of over 50 years, I have been concerned most with the problems of the common man. I have seen the pain of deprivation suffered by the poor who have no access to basic services of health, education or shelter. I am particularly concerned about it. We need policies and actions that will make health care affordable to the poor and the deprived besides creating a culture of compassion and sensitivity among the doctors and other health care professionals," he said.
Top doctors
More than 500 eminent neurosurgeons from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Hong Kong and Kuwait along with faculty from the US, UK, Germany, Japan, Australia, and Canada are attending the four-day conference.
