Chaman Lal memorial awards

NEW DELHI: The Chaman Lal Memorial Society, founded in memory of stage lighting design pioneer Chaman Lal, will honour several personalities associated with theatre at Kamani Auditorium here on April 21.

A special honour will be conferred on M. S. Sathyu for his lifelong dedication to theatre. There will also be awards under different categories like make-up, lighting designing and stagecraft. The awards carry a cash prize of Rs. 25,000, a shawl and a memento.

Slain constable's wife to get job

NEW DELHI: A day after a Delhi Police constable was killed in an encounter with four alleged auto-lifters at New Friends Colony here, Police Commissioner K. K. Paul on Thursday approved induction of the constable's wife into the force.

Thirty-six-year-old Brij Bhushan, posted with the New Friends Colony police station, was killed when a bullet fired by Head Constable Ramhit hit him in the chest.

He is survived by his wife Shashi Bala and two children.

Couple arrested on robbery charge

NEW DELHI: A couple has been arrested for allegedly robbing bus passengers of their valuables by drugging them.

According to the police, Mohammad Umar (30) and his wife Salma (26) would first get acquainted with fellow passengers and then offer them drinks laced with sedatives. Once the passengers fell asleep, they would make off with their belongings.

During interrogation, the accused purportedly confessed to having robbed several passengers at Sarai Kale Khan ISBT.

Verdict reserved in Shivani case

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Thursday reserved judgment on a bail application by R.K. Sharma, dismissed Inspector-General of the Haryana police and prime accused in the Shivani Bhatnagar murder case.

Justice Ravindra Bhatt reserved the judgment following end of arguments by counsel for the accused and the prosecution. Sharma has sought bail on the ground that he was suffering from several ailments and his spinal cord was operated upon last year.

His counsel submitted that there was no apprehension of his influencing witnesses in the case as the recording of their evidence was over.
