dated February 17, 1957: Soviet Foreign Minister

Mr. Dmitri Shepilov has been relieved of his post as Soviet Foreign Minister and replaced by Mr. Andrei Gromyko, an official announcement in Moscow said. Mr. Shepilov became Foreign Minister in June 1956 and was considered one of the leading champions of a new and vigorous Russian policy in the Middle East. In 1952, he became a Member of the Central Committee and shortly after that Chief Editor of the party's newspaper, Pravda. His surprisingly abrupt departure as Foreign Minister is interpreted as strengthening the Communist wing which backs Mr. Vyacheslav Molotov. Mr. Gromyko, 47, was groomed for over ten years by Mr. Molotov to head the Soviet Foreign Ministry, being given top appointments in Washington, at the UN, and at the four-power talks.
