BEIJING: Chinese President Hu Jintao and his U.S. counterpart George W. Bush on Thursday exchanged views in a telephone conversation on bilateral ties and the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula. Thanks to the joint efforts of all parties concerned, the six-party talks have yielded positive results, adopting a joint document, which marks a significant step toward denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, Mr. Hu said. Full implementation of the agreement is of great significance for safeguarding peace and stability in the region and would serve the interests of all parties concerned, Mr. Hu said. He said China is willing to maintain close communication and cooperation with the U.S. and other parties concerned and to play a constructive role in implementing the agreement reached at the last round of six-party talks in September 2005. For his part, Mr. Bush said with the cooperation of all parties, good progress has been made toward solving the nuclear issue, providing a new opportunity for denuclearisation of the peninsula. The U.S. is willing to cooperate closely with China for the implementation of the joint document, Mr. Bush said. Mr. Bush extended greetings to Mr. Hu and the Chinese people on the Spring Festival and said he looked forward to meeting the Chinese President. Xinhua
