SINGAPORE: North Korea on Friday celebrated the 65th birthday of its leader Kim Jong-il, by pledging to raise its military profile to face the U.S. It said it would remain in a state of high defence alert. In a congratulatory message to Mr. Kim, leaders of the military establishment, ruling party, Parliament and the Cabinet said they would mobilise themselves and national resources to defend the country, according to the official news agency. At the main event of the day, it was announced that "the people of this nation send their most glorious and heartfelt greetings to the General who elevated the country to a nuclear power and the status of a great nation."
