Vehicles to be released only if fare meters are fitted

IN POLICE NET: The autorickshaws seized in Kollam on Friday.

KOLLAM: The traffic police seized more than 50 autorickshaws in a crackdown in the city on Friday. The seized autorickshaws have been taken into custody and kept at the traffic police station here. Police said cases have been registered for operating without fare meters.

The case papers were then handed over to the Legal Metrology Department for further action.

The vehicles will be released only after installation of the meters.

Autorickshaws with defunct fare meters and others found plying without operating the meters were also seized.

"Over the years, there have been numerous complaints of commuters being fleeced. The people place much hope on Friday's operation," said C. Amalolbhavan, general secretary of the Kollam Residents Apex Council.
