MYSORE: Writers, theatre persons, artistes, Kannada activists and progressive thinkers came together on Friday to oppose the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal's final verdict.

Led by Nadoja and Pampa awardee D. Javare Gowda, over 100 protesters, including some folk singers, sat in a dharna at a makeshift pandal at the K.R. Circle urging the State Government to speed up the process of filing a review petition against what they called unfair verdict of the tribunal.

Addressing the protesters, Mr. Javare Gowda said that the MPs, instead of quitting, should join the ongoing protests on the Cauvery issue to caution the governments. "Resignation is not the solution. The MPs and MLAs must become pro-active and highlight problems the farmers would face if the final award was implemented," he said.

If at all MPs from the State had to resign, they were M.A.M. Ramaswamy, Rajiv Chandrashekar and Venkaiah Naidu who were elected to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka, he said.

Former Vice-Chancellor J. Lakkappa Gowda said the State Government must file a review petition against the verdict without delay.

Folk songs

Earlier, singers and theatre persons sang folk songs on the theme of farming and river.

Rangayana director C.R. Jambe, writers K. Ramdas, Shivarajappa, Ma.Na. Jawaraiah, Kannada activists, Rangayana artistes, and several others participated.
