KOCHI: A centre for using nano technology in medical science will be opened at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham here on Saturday.

This is the first time that the Department of Science and Technology has given a grant for setting up a nanoscience centre in medicine, said Dr. Prem Nair, Medical Director of the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, at a press meet here on Friday. The Government has given Rs. 5 crore towards setting up the centre, mainly to acquire equipment.

The Amrita Centre for Nanosciences will be inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Planning M.V. Rajashekharan. Eminent scientist C.N.R. Rao, Chairman of the Science Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, will also participate in the function.

Addressing the press meet, Shantikumar V. Nair, Director of the new centre and Dean of Research at the Vidyapeetham, said the Centre would be involved in making nano-biomaterial, which will benefit medical treatment facilities. One of the foremost uses in medical sciences is in making implants. All biological molecules are in nano scale.

Making heart valves, bone, cartilage, skin are some of the areas where nanotechnology can be applied, said Dr. Shantikumar Nair.

Compared to the longevity of synthetic implants, the nano implants would be a revolution.

Research on stem cell will be part of the activity at the Nanocentre, Dr. Nair said.
