Belgaum: The Visvesvaraya Technological University on Saturday withdrew the list of winners of gold medals and rank holders for the academic year 2005-06 after noticing a glaring mistake. The university had announced the list on its official website three days ago. VTU Registrar (Evaluation) Balaji told The Hindu that the list was withdrawn after a mistake had been noticed wherein an ineligible candidate was awarded a rank. He refused to disclose the name. He said a candidate was awarded rank in violations of the university regulations. Denying that there was any "mischief," he attributed the mistake to a "technical error."
