Farmer, wife commit suicide

TUMKUR: An aged couple of Kadugojjanahalli, on the outskirts of Tumkur, were found dead in their house on Saturday. The police said it appeared to be a case of suicide.

The people of the village said Marirangaiah, 75, and his wife, Chinnamma, 68, were worried over debts, which included crop loans from various cooperative and commercial banks.

Yediyurappa has lunch at Dalits' house

BELLARY: Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa had lunch at the residence of Subbarayadu, a Dalit, in Srirampuram colony here on Saturday.

Salary hike soon for teachers of medicine

Bidar: The Government plans to increase the salaries of teachers and staff of government medical colleges. Medical Education Minister V.S. Acharya has been told that the new medical colleges will not get teachers if salaries are not increased. He has agreed to substantially increase salaries, Agriculture Minister and district in-charge Bandeppa Kashempur said here on Saturday. He was speaking to presspersons after inspecting the new medical college building. He said he was confident that the Cabinet would clear the proposal.

The Government would allocate funds to open a horticulture college in Bidar by next year, he said. — Staff Correspondent

DSS to stage protests tomorrow

BANGALORE: The Karnataka Dalit Sangharsh Samithi will hold a `Tamate Chaluvali' and a torchlight parade across the State on Monday to protest against what it has described as the injustice caused to the State by the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal's final award.

Samithi president N. Murthy told presspersons here on Saturday that the agitation would also demand the resignation of all Union Ministers and MPs from the State. Memorandums would be submitted to Deputy Commissioners in all the districts, he said. — Staff Reporter

Janata Party wants bus fares reduced

BANGALORE: Following the reduction in prices of petrol and diesel, the Karnataka Pradesh Janata Party has called for a reduction in bus fares.

In a press release, the party's working president, Ashok Navalgund, said the reduction in prices of petrol and diesel should be passed on to the people by bringing down the bus fares.

This was essential because the severe drought in the State and rising inflation had made it difficult for people to make both ends meet, Mr. Navalgund said. — Staff Reporter

Hassan farmer for world meet

HASSAN: Bharathi Vijay from Hassan along with Bhramarambha Kailasmurthy and Swamy Anand both from Mysore and 12 other farmers from Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh will represent India at the World Farmers' Meet to be held in Mali in Africa from February 21 to 27. Addressing presspersons here, Ms. Bharathi said the meet would discuss the challenges posed by globalisation on food security in the world and also effects of liberalisation that is controlled by few capitalists in the world.

Photo exhibition

CHITRADURGA: Private tour operator SGL Tours and Travels, which is recognised by the Department of Tourism, will hold a photo exhibition on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra at Sri Sharadha Sabhabhavana on February 18 and February 19.

Managing Director of the company Aloor R.A. told presspersons here on Saturday that the objective of the exhibition was to educate people on the yatra. He said many people had misconceptions that it involved a great deal of risk. "Through the exhibition, we would like to let people know that the entire yatra is safe and gives an experience of life," he said. — Staff Correspondent

Filling of posts

HASSAN: District Health and Family Welfare Officer Nagaraja Rao has announced in a press release that the Government has decided to fill 89 posts of woman junior health assistant in the district by appointing retired women junior health assistants on an honorarium of Rs. 3,000 per month for a year. Interviews will be held at district health office here on February 24 at 11 a.m. Candidates should bring their records with them.

Distinction

BIDAR: As many as 16 students of the Bhavanishwar Teachers Training Institute have obtained a distinction in their Diploma in Education examination held in November 2006. Fifteen students have secured a first class. The college has got 84 per cent pass in the examination. — Staff Correspondent

Conference put off

DHARWAD: The Karnataka Rajya Vignana Parishattu, which had proposed to conduct the ninth All-Karnataka Science Convention in Bidar from February 26 to 28, has put off the convention in the wake of developments after the final award of Cauvery Tribunal.

Funds for airport

BIJAPUR: The State Government has released Rs. 5.5 crore for the development of an airport at Buranpur, 10 km from here, according to Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Govind Karjol.

In a statement, he said a government land of 457 acres was available at the village. It still requires 550 acres, which would be acquired from private owners.

MYSORE: A national workshop for special educators on providing better education facilities for hearing impaired children will be organised in Mysore from February 19 to 23. It is being organised by the Department of Special Education of the All India Speech and Hearing Institute in association with Rehabilitation Council of India. Interest rate revised

HUBLI: The Karnataka Vikas Grameen Bank has made an upward revision in the interest rate on deposits, M. Dhananjaya, chairman of the bank, said in a release.
