NRI appointed to House of Lords

London: Lucknow-born Khalid Hameed, a prominent hospital management expert, has been appointed to Britain's Upper House in recognition of his contribution to promotion of international understanding and development of young people.

"One is quite humbled. I hope to play my part in the parliamentary affairs of the country," the 65-year-old leading NRI told PTI while reacting to his appointment to the House of Lords.

To take over in month's time

Mr. Hameed, a former Executive Director and Chief Executive of the Cromwell Hospital, said he would take over as a peer in a month's time.

Educated at Lucknow University, Mr. Hameed arrived in Britain from India in 1968 and worked for three London teaching hospitals. The Appointments Commission, a non-statutory advisory board set up by the Prime Minister to make recommendations for non-party political peerages, said in an official announcement that Mr. Hameed has been chosen for "promotion of international understanding and the development of young people."

Mr. Hameed, one of the six new non-party political peers appointed, has been Chairman of the Commonwealth Youth Exchange Council since 1997.

He is also the High Sheriff of Greater London and Chairman of Alpha Hospitals and is involved in a number of organisations and charities which help develop harmony between diverse faiths and cultures in the U.K.
