`New generation losing interest in science'

KOCHI: The younger generation is losing interest in science subjects, which could have an adverse effect on the nation's progress. Unless we invest on fields of science and technology, our nation would soon draw a blank in talent, said G. Madhavan Nair, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

He was delivering the sixth edition of the Joseph Cardinal Parecattil commemorative lecture at Bharat Mata College here on Saturday.

It was hard to find talents in fields like astronomy, atomic science or even teaching. The youth should take up the challenge to use modern technology to answer the nation's demands. They should think globally and act locally, Mr. Nair said.

In his lecture on the subject `Space Technology for Societal Applications', he outlined the advancement that India made in the field of space science. India would soon offer its satellite launch vehicle facility to Italy on commercial basis, which would be a landmark event in history, he said.

He also gave a brief overview of various fields where India stamped its mark, like earth observation applications, space and disaster management, telemedicine, Village Resource Centres and the Chandrayaan-I project.

The commemorative lecture was followed by an interactive session, where Mr. Nair answered questions raised by students. Varghese Kalaparambath, director, Bharat Matha College, paid tribute to Cardinal Joseph Parecattil. Laliamma Jose, Principal, and Teresa Joseph, Head of Department of English, spoke.
