Corporation for medicine purchase

Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy has said that a corporation will be constituted for the purpose of purchasing and distributing medicines to all government hospitals in the State. Inaugurating a special medical camp organised here on Saturday in connection with the first anniversary celebrations of the N.S. Memorial Institute of Medical Sciences, Ms. Sreemathy said the Government was expected to earn a profit of Rs.20 crore annually through the corporation. The medicine-stocking and distribution sector is considered corrupt and the aim of the Left Democratic Front Government is to clean it.

Laxity on the part of the previous Government to take care of government hospitals provided an opportunity for the entry of super-speciality hospitals. Now that it has become a reality, the LDF Government is thinking in terms of utilising the services of doctors in the super-speciality hospitals. A meeting in this regard is being held in Kochi on February 27.

With regard to constituting a medical university in the State, she said an interim report for the purpose had been submitted. The Government is considering to bringing the field staff of the health sector under the management of local bodies. If a local body submits a formal request, the whole nursing vacancies in the respective area will be filled in a week's time. In spite of the financial crisis faced by the Government, steps are being taken to improve the health sector.

Eravipuram MLA A.A. Aziz presided. Mayor N. Padmalochanan and district panchayat president K. Devaki spoke.
