`Prices low for ryots, high for others'

Dattatreya wants Government to ensure MSP for farmers

ANANTAPUR: State president of Bharatiya Janata Party Bandaru Dattatreya on Friday alleged that the State and Central Governments had failed in ensuring minimum support price to agriculture produce.

Addressing a press conference here, he cited the crashing prices of turmeric, chilli and tamarind in the market yards as example. But this did not benefit the consumers as they were being forced to purchase at exorbitant rates.

He cited the example of onion crop. While the farmers were getting a maximum of Rs. 100 per quintal the consumers were buying it at Rs. 1,800. Similar was the fate of sugarcane farmers too. Against the MSP of Rs. 1,150 per tonne they were getting a maximum of Rs. 1,100. In Maharashtra and Karnataka the farmers were getting Rs. 1,500 and free transportation.

The BJP was planning a `Chalo Assembly' protest on March 21 on the issue of remunerative prices to the agriculture produce, he said.
