MLC election: no nomination from local bodies

HYDERABAD: Returning officers of the 31 local authorities constituencies all over the State drew blank without receiving any nomination even on the third day on Saturday after the notification was issued for the elections to the Legislative Council.

This is attributed to the fact that most political parties are still conducting the exercise to finalise the names of their candidates or holding consultations with other parties for seat adjustments. However, seven nominations each were received from the teachers' and graduates' constituencies.

The last date for filing the nominations in all the constituencies is February 22.

Meanwhile, the system of proportional representation by means of single transferable vote is expected to ensure election of at least 20 members of the Congress from the Assembly, four of the Telugu Desam, two of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi, and one each of CPI(M) and CPI. This reckoning is based on the relative strengths of the parties in the Assembly although electoral alliances could alter the final result.

Chief Electoral Officer V. Bhaskar said the notification to elect MLCs from the Assembly would be issued on February 28. Referring to complaints about deficiencies in the electoral rolls for the Council elections, the CEO said wrong entries and duplications, if detected even at this stage, could be rectified after giving due notice.
