HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Council of All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) will support five candidates for the Legislative Council elections. P.J.Chandrasekhar Rao, general secretary, said on Saturday that the council would back V.V.Rama Rao (Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam constituency), Veena Ajaykumar (Anantapur, Kadapa, Kurnool), Radhakrishna Murthy (Guntur, Krishna), Gorki (Khammam, Nalgonda, Warangal), Chiranjeevini Kumari (East and West Godavari) and Nageswar (Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Mahabubnagar). — Special Correspondent

New SCR train

HYDERABAD: South Central Railway will introduce a Bhubaneswar-Pondicherry weekly express train (Train No.2898) from February 20. In the return direction, Train No.2897 Pondicherry-Bhubaneswar weekly express train will run from February 21.

The train will depart from Bhubaneswar at 11.45 a.m. on Tuesdays, and reach Pondicherry at 1.35 p.m. on Wednesdays. The return train will start from Pondicherry at 6.15 p.m. on Wednesdays and reach Bhubaneswar at 7.25 p.m. on Thursdays. — Staff Reporter

Hacked to death

KADAPA: An APSRTC driver Anjaiah allegedly hacked to death his wife R. Vasantha, 25, in Brahmanapalle village in Rajampet mandal on Saturday.

Police suspect that Vasantha's refusal to give him money could have led to the murder. She had recently returned from the Gulf. The couple has three children including a 15-day-old infant, police said. Anjaiah is at large. — Staff Reporter

Plea to hike wages

HYDERABAD: The State council of All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has appealed to Labour Commissioner R. Karikal Valaven to revise the wages of contract labour since the cost of living was shooting up. T. Narasimhan, secretary and a member of the State Minimum Wages Advisory Board, in a representation to Mr. Valaven sought a notification revising the wage rates, which are already due, notified on January 27, 2005He stressed the urgency factor and added that large number of workers would suffer if the revision was delayed.He urged the department to introduce a system of variable DA-linked consumer price index. — Special Correspondent

Congress suspends four leaders

Rajahmundry: Congress observer K. Kodanda Reddy, in a statement on Saturday, announced that the party suspended four members, including three former corporators, who were allegedly working against the interests of the party in the Rajahmundry Municipal Corporation elections.

Arava Suresh Kumar, Isukapalli Srinivas, Mokamati Satyanarayana and Angada Saraladevi were suspended for six years. - Staff Reporter

LLB semester-end examinations

Kakinada: The semester-end examinations of the three-year and five-year LLB courses will commence on April 4, according to P.V. Trinath, principal of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Law.

He has asked candidates to pay the examination fee without penalty before March 6 and with compounding fee Rs. 100 before March 13.

The BL and year-end LLB examinations will commence on March 1 at Dr. Ambedkar College of Law in Andhra University. Hall-tickets also will be issued at the university college itself.

Woman ends life

Kakinada: Dommeti Durga Devi, a nurse in the Byrraju Foundation at Vadapalem, reportedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at her residence in Ambajipet in the wee hours of Saturday.
