ANANTAPUR: The issue of notification for elections to the Legislative Council by the Election Commission on Thursday has stirred up activity among the aspirants, particularly for the graduates' and teachers' constituencies. However, the aspirants for local bodies' constituencies are silent as they are required to be selected by the parties. The Rayalaseema West constituency for graduates and teachers comprises Anantapur, Kurnool and Kadapa districts. Registered graduate voters and teachers in the three districts will elect one MLC each from the graduates and teachers constituencies of Rayalaseema West. One MLC each will be elected from Kurnool and Kadapa districts and two from Anantapur district from the local bodies' constituencies. MPTC and ZPTC members, municipal councillors and municipal corporators in the three districts will select their MLCs separately. The electorate of Rayalaseema West graduates constituency is 1,52,108. The constituents for teachers' constituency are 13,936, including 4,771 in Kadapa, 4,787 in Anantapur and 4,378 in Kurnool. The electorate for local bodies constituency in Anantapur district is 1,131. Co-option members in the mandal, Zilla Parishad, municipality, corporations have no voting rights in the Legislative Council elections. While the Congress holds 53 per cent of local bodies' votes, the TDP has 47 per cent votes in the district. The Returning Officer for Rayalaseema West Graduates' and Teachers' constituencies is District Collector D. Kadmiel. For the local bodies' constituencies in Anantapur district, the Returning Officer is Joint Collector Anita Rajendra. Among the aspirants for local bodies' constituencies and members to be nominated by MLAs are DCC president P. Venugopal Reddy, former legislator Y. Sivarami Reddy and former ZP chairperson G. Thippeswamy on behalf of the Congress and Palle Raghunatha Reddy and K.C. Narayana are from the TDP.
