Battery operated signal system developed by class VIII student

GUNTUR: Gates at level crossing get automatically closed, as soon as the train approaches, and this sounds to be a solution for recent mess up in Guntur at such a level crossing where the train had to wait for the road traffic to clear.

The moment the last compartment goes past the level crossing, the gates give way to the vehicles on the road. This is the automatic signaling system developed by Akhil, a Class 8 student of Kanna English medium School here.

``A battery-operated switch beneath the railway tracks is connected to the lever of the gate at the level crossing and when a train wheel rolls over it, the switch pushes the lever closing the gates,'' explains the student.

Many fatal accidents at railway crossings could be avoided using such automatic switching system, Akhil told The Hindu . That was one of the many models designed by students of Kanna English Medium School on display at the on going `all-round talent exhibition'.

400 models

Models on display drew inspiration from several physics and life sciences principles with eye-catching activities taking place in every exhibition hall in the school with students from all its branches participating in it. There are over 400 scientific models designed by under the supervision of teachers, said Kanna group of educational institutions director Kanna Anjeneyulu, popularly known as `Kanna master'. Such exhibitions would inculcate scientific temper among the students and provide them a platform to exhibit their latent skills, he opined. Students designed an artificial planetarium using battery-operated lights and models made of Plaster of Paris. There were many mathematical puzzles, which were attracting the parents. ``We have invited students from Zilla Parishad and Municipal schools to the exhibition in addition to other private schools. The GMC has agreed to provide free transportation to students wishing to come to the exhibition.'' he added.
