Thousands witness car festival

Elaborate arrangements made for smooth conduct of fete

VIJAYAWADA: Religious fervour marked the traditional "Radhostavam" (car festival) performed following the holy Mahasivarathi festival in old city on Saturday with thousands of devotees tugged the chariot ensconced with Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy, Brahmaramba Mallikharjuna Swamy and Vasantha Mallikharjuna Swamy.

City police Commissioner C.V. Anand graced the event as chief guest, organised by Sri Kanyaka Parameswari Annastaram Committee. Amidst chants of "Namasivayya" devotees clinched the ropes of the chariot and pulled it till Vinayaka Temple. The idol of Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy was brought from the Indrakeeladri while the idol of Pramaramba Mallikharjuna Swamy was brought from the Sivalayam in the old city.

Folk dances

The entire canal road was choked with devotees who thronged to witness the annual ritual. Dressed in various hues, artistes took part in folk dances such as kolattam, puli vesham and bhajans adding lustre to the event.

Cutting across political affiliations, several political leaders, devasthanam officials and city elite participated in the Radhostavam. The city police made elaborate traffic regulation, especially in old city in the evening for the smooth conduct of the event.
