Lalu Prasad for President's rule in U.P.

PATNA: Railway Minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad on Saturday advocated imposition of President's rule in Uttar Pradesh in deference to the apex court's verdict declaring the Mulayam Singh Government unconstitutional.

Talking to reporters, Mr. Prasad said that he was not in favour of dismissing a government and imposing Central rule but "I am saying are you going to respect the Supreme Court's verdict or not."

The RJD president saw no reason to waste time and insisted on immediate action to uphold constitutional values.

According to Mr. Prasad imposition of Central rule was imminent and wondered why "those swearing by the Constitution had developed cold feet in stepping down," particularly after the apex court had established violation of the Constitution.

Mr. Prasad said the situation in Uttar Pradesh was extraordinary with anarchy prevailing there.
