BELLARY: Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa has instructed officials of the Department of Food and Civil Supplies to conduct a fresh survey of below-poverty-line (BPL) families in the district and delete from the list the names of those who were ineligible.

At a meeting to review the progress made by the district administration in the implementation of programmes and the measures that have been proposed for tackling the likely drought during summer, at the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Saturday, Mr. Yediyurappa said that according to statistics, there were over three lakh BPL families in the district. He said the actual number of BPL families should be ascertained so that the benefits of Government schemes could reach the needy.

He said the Government had released adequate funds for development programmes in the district. "The Government will not release any more funds after March 15, and all projects should be completed according to schedule," he added.

Deputy Commissioner Arvind Srivastav gave details of the programme for tackling the likely drought during summer and said he had forwarded a proposal to the Government requesting the allocation of an additional 60,000 quintals of foodgrains so that the food-for-work scheme could be implemented. He said that the drinking water supply and availability of fodder were being constantly reviewed.

Public grievances

Mr. Yediyurappa also heard public grievances and directed the administration to address the problems mentioned.

He received 71 petitions, including those for construction of a ring road in Bellary city, development of an airport here, maintenance of cleanliness in the city and loans for physically handicapped and unemployed youths.
