Students protest against Cauvery award

Staff Correspondent

YOUTH BRIGADE: Students of Government Arts College forming a human chain at NR Circle in Hassan on Saturday.

HASSAN: Over 1,000 students of Government Arts College, led by their principal and teachers, formed a human chain at NR Circle here on Saturday in protest against the award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal. They prevented the movement of traffic on the main Bangalore-Mangalore road for more than 15 minutes.

The students submitted a memorandum signed by principal T.N. Prabhakar to Deputy Commissioner K.H. Aswathanarayana Gowda. The memorandum stated that of the 760 km of the Cauvery, 400 km ran through the State, and it was joined by 20 smaller rivers.

It was the lifeline of the people in Chikmagalur, Hassan, Mandya, Tumkur, Mysore and Chamarajanagar, the memorandum said.

Requirement

It said the water of the Cauvery was required by both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Although the river was known as "Dakshinada Gange", it was unlike rivers in the north that often overflowed their banks. The Cauvery, however, ran thin, especially during the summer months, and filled up only during the monsoon. The students appealed to the Government to reveal the contents of the tribunal's 1,000-page award to the people, and said Karnataka and Tamil Nadu should get an equal share of the Cauvery's waters. They demanded that the Government reject the award of the tribunal outright.

Student welfare officers J. Deva Kumari, I.M. Mohan, C.L. Lokappa Gowda, H.M. Thimme Gowda, Chandrappa, Narayan, Vidya, Raghavendra and Devaraja Gowda also signed the memorandum.
