Tindivanam bus stand site chosen during AIADMK rule: Stalin

CHENNAI: Minister for Local Administration M.K. Stalin on Saturday flayed AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa for asking her party activists to stage a demonstration against the move to set up a new bus stand on lake land in Tindivanam town, on February 19.

"Suitable site"

Mr. Stalin said in a statement here that the `Tindivanam lake' was chosen by officials as the "suitable site" for setting up of the bus stand in 1992 and the land was acquired by the municipality on January 14, 2003, after remitting Rs.12,80,849.

As a follow up measure, a proposal was sent to the Commissioner of Municipal Administration (CMA) through the Collector on January 30, 2003, for establishing the bus stand at an estimated cost of Rs. 5 crore. The then chairman of the municipality belonged to the AIADMK, Mr. Stalin said.

Based on a report submitted by the deputy chairman and commissioner of the municipality and the local motor vehicle inspector, the Collector recommended the proposal to the CMA. Permission was granted on June 9, 2004, to appoint a consultant for designing the bus stand, he recalled.

Though all these developments took place when the AIADMK was in power, Ms. Jayalalithaa was now raising objections to the decision, he said. "Was she not aware of the Government Order against encroachment of lakes then?"

Just as steps were taken to float tenders for appointing a consultant, the then AIADMK Minister C.V. Shanmugam recommended a site belonging to the Wakf Board for the bus stand. The Collector also wrote to the municipal commissioner on August 31, 2004, asking him to take necessary steps in that direction.

But the then AIADMK chairman of the municipality informed the Collector on September 14, 2004 that the proposal was unacceptable. Only after this, a letter was obtained from the municipal commissioner accepting the proposal to choose the Wakf Board land as the site for the new bus stand, though the Board laid down several preconditions including renewal of the agreement once in three years, Mr. Stalin pointed out.

The municipality with its chairman belonging to the AIADMK passed a resolution on June 13, 2006, pointing out the difficulties in choosing the Wakf Board land and stressing the need to set up the bus stand on the lake site, he said.
