NEW DELHI: Sarwan Singh struck twice as DAV College, Jalandhar, outplayed Jawaharlal Nehru College, Bhopal, 3-0 in the final of the SAIL 14th Nehru Champion Colleges hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium here on Saturday. After Rahul Bhardwaj had put the Jalandhar team ahead by a goal in the 32nd minute capitalising on the pass from Gurdeep Singh, Sarwan consolidated the position with two goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Skipper Sarwan deflected Mandeep Singh's shot with his left for the first goal four minutes on resumption and he was equally alert to pounce on the opportunity when Onkar Singh sent the ball sharply into the scoring-circle, ten minutes later. The winner was presented Rs. 96,000 and the runner-up was given Rs. 64,000.
Patiala team third
The coach of the winning team, Olympian Gundeep Kumar was awarded Rs. 8,000 and the coach of the runner-up team, Habeeb Hasan Rs. 5,000. Government Mahindra College, Patiala, that beat Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, MGK Vidyapith, Varanasi, 5-3 in the match for the third place was presented Rs. 32,000. The coach of the team team Hira Singh was presented Rs.3,000. The Pepsi penalty corner award of Rs. 20,000 was also won by the Patiala team.
