MUMBAI: Sourav Kothari (Petroleum Sports Promotion Board) thwarted the challenge from Maharashtra cueists Z. Rattansey and Sunny in Group S round-robin league of the Khar Gymkhana National 8-ball pool championships at Khar Gymkhana on Saturday.

Playing in his first eight-ball pool event, the Kolkata player, employed with ONGC, got a grip on the game early to run out 5-1 winner and ensure a berth in the knockout phase of the ONGC-sponsored event.

Bihar's Shivam Arora proved to be his toughest rival, leading 4-3 before the former roared back for a 5-3 victory.
