`Courts should consider Statute values'

KOCHI: Minister for Education M.A. Baby has urged the judiciary to consider the core values enshrined in the Constitution while delivering judgments.

Delivering the inaugural address at a workshop on `Democratisation of education and impact of judicial pronouncements,' organised by the All-India Lawyers' Union here on Saturday, Mr. Baby said the Constitution ensured social justice and equality for all in society.

The Minister said the judiciary should review whether the judgments were in tune with these constitutional provisions. He said an academic discussion should be initiated on whether privatisation and globalisation had impacted some of the recent court verdicts. The Minister said society would always review the life and behaviour of those in the higher echelons of the judiciary. He said politicians should try not to give a chance to the public to unleash a negative campaign against them. He also urged the media to stand by truth and try to regain the confidence of the public.

Mr. Baby said profit should not be the sole motive of private educational institutions in the State. These institutions should have a social responsibility. He said the Government would ensure quality education to students with academic merit. The Minister said the paying capacity of a student should not become the eligibility for getting admission to a professional course.

Mr. Baby said student organisations have been fighting against various social evils on the campus.

He said campus politics would help in creating a healthy atmosphere in various educational institutions across the State.
