Neuropathology helps in diagnosing nervous disorders

Kakinada: Pathogenesis is vital in diagnosis and treatment of disease. As such, one should be thorough with the latest advancements in pathology, said C. Sundaram, Professor and Head of Department of Pathology, NIMS, Hyderabad, here on Saturday.

Participating as guest speaker at the Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on neuropathology organised by the departments of Pathology and Neurosciences, Rangaraya Medical College, she said that neuropathology helps in diagnosing nervous disorders.

She traced the pathology of infections of the central nervous system such as meningitis, brain abscess, granuloma and encephalitis and myelitis.

Dr. Sundaram said that the incidence of brain abscess has changed from pre-anti-biotic era to present day with the availability of antibiotics, culture studies, and stereo tactic brain biopsy and aspiration techniques. She said that the incidence of brain abscess was showing an increase in frequency in the past decade due to HIV infection. Appropriate culture studies of aspirated or excised tissue including aerobic, anaerobic fungal cultures should be done in all cases. Besides a search for etiological agent must be made in excised tissue for proper treatment.

CME programme

S. Raj Kumar, principal of the medical college, while inaugurating the programme, said that pathological changes that occur in the nervous system were important in diagnosing diseases and treatment.

A.V. Krishnam Raju, Professor and Head of Department of Pathology and former principal presided. M. Suryakumari, Superintendent of Government General Hospital, released the souvenir while Dr.D. Rangarao, Dr.L.Krishna and Dr. R. Vijaya Bhaskar Associate professors of Pathology also spoke on various aspects of Neuropathology. Dr. S. Suryaprakasarao, retired Director of Medical Education, Dr. Seshagirirao and Dr. Malleswerarao Neurosciences professors attended.
