CPI(M) leader demands resignation of SEC

CHENNAI: State Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) N. Varadarajan on Saturday demanded the resignation of State Election Commissioner (SEC) D. Chandrasekaran.

In a statement here, Mr. Varadarajan referred to the strictures passed by the third judge who heard the cases on the Chennai Corporation polls, against the SEC "for failing to take proper action, though there were several incidents of violence" during the October 13, 2006 poll. "The SEC, who has failed to perform his duty, should quit, bowing to the verdict of the High Court," Mr. Varadarajan said.

Dismissal sought

State president of the Bharatiya Janata Party L. Ganesan demanded immediate dismissal of Mr. Chandrasekaran.

In a statement here, Mr. Ganesan said even after the third judge passing strictures, the SEC continuing in office would be opposed to the court's verdict.
