"Effect of obesity obvious among teenagers"

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: A 22-year-old recently underwent bariatric surgery at Lifeline Multispeciality Hospital in Perungudi. Overweight even as a child, he weighed 175 kg before the surgery. He now weighs 98 kg.

A 40-year-old mother of two chose bariatric surgery after she could not walk around her house. She weighed 152 kg before surgery. She now weighs 100 kg.

Even as obesity is on the rise among the urban population, the effect of the trend is conspicuous among teenagers, says Hospital chairman J.S. Rajkumar. In his hospital, between 1997 and 2003, he performed 29 surgeries. The number rose to 47 between 2003 and 2007, he said. "The trend among young people is to eat more and become fat."

The Hospital will host the fifth national congress on obesity in the middle of March. About 400 delegates are expected to attend the conference, which will include demonstration of laparoscopic bariatric surgeries. According to him, 50 bariatric surgeries were performed across the country last month.
