CHENNAI: Students of Olcott Memorial High School have a lot to cheer about on the drinking water front.

The Theosophical Order of Service, in order to commemorate the death centenary of Col H.S. Olcott, founder of The Theosophical Society, has donated a reverse osmosis treatment plant to the school.

C.V. Shankar, Officer on Special Duty (Relief and Rehabilitation) Tsunami Rehabilitation Programme, switched on the plant at a simple ceremony held on the school premises on Saturday.

Mr. Shankar stressed on the need for children, who form part of the future generations, to consume safe drinking water.

Recalling the December 2004 tsunami, he said the media's role in creating awareness about the tragedy was tremendous. He also appreciated organisations which were able to up the ante during the hour of crisis in getting relief material from various sources.

Large investments had gone to the tsunami-affected areas and referred to a big hospital that was coming up in Nagapattinam.

He added that the World Health Organisation, in a study in 2005, had found out that the sanitary conditions in the coastal belts improved appreciably after the tsunami.

R. Parthasarathy, Tirumalai Charity Trust, advised the students to take care of the treatment plant.

Grundfos India has donated the pumps for the plant and Nayagara Water Solutions Private Limited has erected and commissioned the plants.

C.V.K. Maithreya, president, Theosophical Order of Service, participated in the meeting.
