CHENNAI: In a bid to monitor employees' attendance, the Ambattur municipality has launched a computerised attendance system.

Inaugurated by municipal chairman K.N. Sekar on Friday, the system will monitor the working hours of the employees and facilitate digital data for estimates of payroll and other administrative works.

Computer facility

Around 10 computers worth Rs. 8 lakh have been installed in the municipality. Eight of these will be functioning in the divisional offices in areas including Mogappair, Padi, Athipattu, Venkatapuram and Korattur.

Digital pad

A municipal official said around 800 employees would use the system. It would require the placing of the thumb of an employee on a digital pad to record his presence at least twice a day within the stipulated time. This would facilitate speeding up of development works in the area, he claimed. The system is already in use at Panrutti, Coimbatore and Erode.

It is expected to be extended to other municipalities in the fringes of the Chennai city shortly.
