BJP focusses on `anti-incumbency'

Party has fielded 34 candidates

CHENNAI: The 34 Bharatiya Janata Party candidates in the fray for elections to the Chennai Corporation Council, focussed their campaign on the "anti-incumbency factor."

Blaming the ruling party for placing obstacles in the way of parties which decided to contest the elections, G. Kumaravelu, vice-president of the State BJP and in-charge of its campaign in the city, said though the verdict against the ruling party in the by-elections was not going to effect a regime change, a "strong anti-incumbency factor" had made the DMK Government nervous. This was why the ruling party and its allies did not embark on a high-profile campaign.

Although issues such as price rise were not related to civic polls, leaders of the ruling party "avoided" the electorate, he claimed.

Voters, who witnessed the violence in the October 2006 polls, were repenting as to why they backed the DMK-led alliance in the Assembly elections.

Maharashtra verdict

Referring to the outcome of the recent civic polls in Maharashtra, Mr. Kumaravelu pointed out that most of the urban local bodies had voted for the Opposition front there. This time his party adopted the method of door-to-door campaigning.

State BJP president L. Ganesan toured Mylapore and West Mambalam to wrap up the party's campaign on Friday.
