Alleged drug peddlers arrested

NEW DELHI: Three alleged drug peddlers, all residents of Jammu and Kashmir, have been arrested by the Anti-Auto Theft Squad of the Delhi police with 8 kg of charas. The contraband is valued at Rs. 12 lakhs in the international market.

According to the police, Abdul Qayum Gennie (37), Ashaq Hussain Sheikh (33) and Javed Ahmed Mir (23) were arrested on Ring Road near Safdarjung Hospital on Friday evening when they were going to deliver the consignment to a customer. A team headed by ACP (Operations) Dinesh Kumar Gupta intercepted their auto-rickshaw for a routine check and found their conduct suspicious. When searched, packets of charas were allegedly found concealed in their overcoats.

At their instance, the truck used for transportation of consignment was also recovered from Azadpur Mandi.

DCP (South-West) Ravindra Yadav said the trio used to procure the drug from a source in Pulwama and gave him part of the profit to fund anti-social activities. A special cavity had been designed beneath the seat of the truck to conceal the contraband. The trio planned to establish a network of drug-traffickers in the Capital, he added.

Abdul is a school dropout and Javed is illiterate. Ashaq, a matriculate, had worked with the Forest Department as a security guard for a few years.

Man held on murder charge

NEW DELHI: A barber has been arrested in connection with the murder of a resident of Nihal Vihar here.

According to the police, Ujagar Singh and his friends had an altercation with Manoj on New Year's Eve and they beat him up badly. Later, Manoj went to Ujagar's house and asked him to disclose the names of his friends. When he refused, Manoj allegedly shot him dead.

The weapon of offence has been recovered at his instance, the police said.

Two arrested

NEW DELHI: Two persons have been arrested in connection with the murder of a resident of Bijnor in UP three years ago.

According to the police, Nafees alias Charsi often used abusive language against the wife and daughter of his neighbour Sharaft. When he refused to mend his ways, Sharaft along with Akram and Riyazul allegedly strangulated him to death. They threw his body near a cement godown in Sarojini Nagar. They even tried to burn the body.

Efforts are on to trace Riyazul.

Training session

NEW DELHI: A daylong training session-cum-seminar on Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, was organised by the North-East Delhi police at Shahdara here on Saturday.

Over 50 residents' welfare associations and several non-government organisations took part in the seminar organised as part of the Delhi Police Week-2007. Speaking on the occasion, Additional District Sessions Judge Ashwini Sarpal emphasised the need for greater interaction to make the new legislation a social reality.
