HYDERABAD: A youth Santosh Mudale, 27, who allegedly wanted to lead a lavish lifestyle ended up behind the bars here on Saturday.

Member of a middle class tailoring family, Mudale allegedly collected lakhs of rupees from gullible people offering high interest for loans -- Rs. 4,000 a day for an amount of Rs. 1 lakh -- and spent that money on expensive liquor, clothes and cosmetics.

He also claimed his father was Lok Sabha member and collected Rs. 6 lakhs from a jobless youth assuring him of a Sub-Inspector post under MP's quota, Banjara Hills ACP V. Ramakrishnaiah told a press conference. Bandra police of Mumbai arrested Mudale a couple of years ago on cheating and forgery charge.

Born and brought up in Champapet, Mudale had a fascination for luxurious lifestyle. He used to go to a mechanic Shami for repairing his Yamaha bike where he claimed his father was an MP. Believing his version, Shami began introducing Mudale as MP's son to his friends and clients.

Welfare programmes

The trickster told them that he received funds worth Rs. 68 lakhs from ICICI Bank for organising welfare programmes through an international voluntary organisation but required `a few lakhs' for getting the funds released. "To impress them with the loans he thus secured, he would frequent five-star hotels, use laptop ," the ACP explained.

As his popularity grew, a graduate V. Raghava Reddy, who failed in physical fitness test for selection of SI post, approached him for help. Mudale collected Rs. 6 lakhs from him saying each MP had powers to recruit two SIs.

Reddy smelt a rat as the accused person demanded one more lakh showing an appointment order under the letterhead of police recruitment board.

He approached the Jubilee Hills Inspector M. Srinivas. Mudale initially feigned ignorance but later admitted to cheating..
