Jaundice: zonal meet on February 27

KOCHI : A special zone-level meeting will be convened by Water Resources Minister N.K. Premachandran on February 27 in Kochi to discuss the issues related to the water distribution system in the background of the spread of contagious diseases in the district.

The Health Department authorities issued a warning to the public regarding the use of cool drinks, including ice-creams, to check the spread of diseases.

The authorities said that case studies in the four grama panchayats where cases of jaundice were reported revealed the spread of the disease from bottled or packaged soft drinks, mostly sold through shops near schools.

The cases were reported mostly in boys also, highlighting the spread of disease through soft drinks.

Presence of E-coli bacterium was found in the sample of cream milk at an ice-cream parlour in Okkal panchayat from where no cases of jaundice had been reported so far.

Traces of human faeces were found, according to the District Medical Officer.

A total of 166 jaundice cases were reported in the district so far. Out of these, 121 cases were from Kadamakudi, Mulavukadu, Karumaloor and Alangad panchayats. Chlorine tablets were distributed in these villages for water purification. The medical teams inspected 7,456 houses and 363 wells in these panchayats.
