A wait for mass nesting of turtles

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: Mother nature is yet to make the Rushikulya river mouth coast in Ganjam district conducive for the nesting of Olive Ridley turtles.

This coast line, which boasts of witnessing a rare phenomenon of two nesting seasons of these endangered turtles last year, is yet to experience mass nesting of Olive Ridley turtles. Mass nesting has already started at the Gahiramatha coast in Bhadrak district.

Sporadic nesting of turtles has already started at the Rushikulya river mouth coast since Feb. 7, said Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), S.N. Mahaptra. But their number is four to five every night. The forest department officials, experts from the WWF and Wild Life Institute of India, Dehradun, are eagerly awaiting the mass nesting of Olive Ridley turtles at Rushikulya river mouth coast every night. All arrangements are complete to welcome these marine guests but the wait continues.
