KADAPA: Bias in certain traditions and imbalances prevalent between men and women in society were major factors leading to domestic violence against women, District Collector M.T. Krishna Babu said on Sunday. Government had enacted a legislation to protect women victims of domestic violence in 2006, he said in a legal literacy camp on Domestic Violence (Prevention) Act at Cooperative Colony here. Lack of proper understanding between couples, drunkenness, financial woes etc. shattered families, he said. The perpetrator and victim need not necessarily be husband and wife. Those living together or had lived in a house by virtue of birth, marriage or adoption would be covered under the Act, he said. Either the victim or anybody on her behalf could complain of domestic violence, he said. Protection officer, judicial officer, police officer, service organisations and shelter homes could deal with complaints. The Act provided for comprehensive protection of women victims, District Judge M. Vijayalakshmi said. Women were being enlightened on lawful protection, free legal assistance, financial aid and safeguarding of children, she said. Protection Officer would forward a domestic violence report to the magistrate court and give its copy to the aggrieved woman, she said. A magistrate court would hear the case within three days of the complaint and deliver judgement in 60 days, Additional District Judge Surendrababu Reddy stated. OSD (Operations) A.S.C. Wesley, District Protection Officer P.V. Lakshmaiah, Bar Association president Raghava Reddy, judicial officers B. Syamsunder, Veeraiah, Satyanarayana Murthy, Ravinder Reddy, and Municipal Corporation resource person Gangulaiah were present.
