Steelers gets past Dynamos

CHANDIGARH: Orissa Steelers consolidated its position at the top of the Premier Hockey League standings with a convincing 4-2 win over Chandigarh Dynamos here on Sunday.

Dynamos opened the account in the sixth minute. Rajpal Singh deflected one from close past Orissa custodian Salman Akbar.

In the 12th minute, Steelers struck the equaliser from its first penalty corner when a dipping Dilip Tirkey direct hit beat a prostrate Dynamos custodian Baljit Singh.

Orissa Steelers then took the lead in the 25th with another penalty corner conversion. In an indirect variation, Tirkey sent a measured ball to the left of the goalkeeper and its Argentine import Mario Alamada deflected it in.

Mario Alamada, the livewire of Steelers's attack on the day, scored again in the 34th minute to increase the lead.

Thereafter, Dynamos, which failed to control the fast breaks of Steelers, pulled one back with a surprise counter attack in the 40th minute. Mandeep Singh made the best use of a long ball into the circle by Haravinder Singh to make it 3-2.

However, Steelers made it 4-2 within six minutes with a brilliant field goal by Prem Kumar in the 46th minute and held on to the lead till the end.

Lions prevails

Earlier, Bangalore Lions chalked out a hard-fought 2-1 win over Sher-e-Jalandhar.

The Lions conceded the first goal in the 15th minute after a defensive lapse inside the 25-yard line saw Sher-e-Jalandhar star Gagan Ajit Singh steal the ball on the right flank.

He darted into the circle and shot home from a narrow angle. The Lions then took control of the midfield with a four-man brigade and stopped the dangerous rival raids from the right by marking Baljit Singh Saini and Baljit Singh Dhillon.

The Lions struck the equaliser in the 19th minute when speedy striker Hari Prasad put Sandeep Michael in possession with a short pass. Sandeep smashed the ball home. Two minutes from half-time, Lions's second penalty corner saw Len Aiyappa scoring what turned out to be the match-winner.

On Saturday, Maratha Warriors beat Chandigarh Dynamos 2-0.— Agencies
